Name: Dragons
Alternate Name(s): Nagas, Longs, Ryus, Wyverns
Brief History: Dragons are an ancient species. Their history has been proven to be older than that of man, since the bones of their ancestors have been excavated, labeled as dinosaur remains and put in museums. As well-known as their history is their flighty nature, in which thought the ages they avoided all contact with civilization. Dragons kept themselves hidden from most other intelligent beings except for a select few, who saw their appearence as good luck and honored their presence by creating statues, armor, and other objects of value in their image.
Dragons most often associated themselves with humans and faeries, particularly the human emperors of ancient China and the faerie kings of medieval Europe, who they saw as wise and benevolent. However, their friendship with both races was quickly turned into bitter hatred for one another over two isolated events. In China, the wife of a powerful Emperor befriended a serpentine dragon named Jade, and in a fit of jealousy, the Emperor sent his army against the dragon, killing both Jade and the empress. (The Emperor later felt remorse for his action, and named the most precious stone in the land after the dragon.) In Europe, a dragon named Gomaus was possessed by a demon. Under the influence of the demon, Gomaus stole many of the treasures from the Fey kingdom and kidnapped King Adaum and Queen Evalia. The human knight, Sir George of the Redcrosse, under direction of the faerie Princess Uoena, slayed the dragon to save the king and queen. This offended dragon-kind as the fey could have just as easily used their magic to dispossess Gomaus and spare his life.
Because of these two incidents, dragons no longer associate with any other races and live solitary lives in vast uncharted areas of the world. They dwell on the tops of the tallest of mountains, in the darkest of underground caves, in the bottoms of deep lakes, and deep in the murkiest bowels of swampland, where they are capable of hiding despite their immense size and inability to shape-shift. Most often, dragons live in solitude, but some dragons, particularly mountain-dwelling dragons, can live in small family units. Their only concerns are finding food and remaining hidden from those who would exploit them. The institution of the Council of 14 had no impact on their reclusive way of life, as they were already well practiced in living their lives without the interference of other living beings. However, with the conflicts between the council and its enemies, the dragon races faces the proposition that they must choose sides or face extinction amidst the forthcoming violence.
Weaknesses: Despite obviously being magical creatures. Dragons cannot wield any magic, and they are highly susceptible to the magic of other beings. Their large size and their inability to hide their true nature has become more of a burden than an advantage in recent years, as once a dragon is found, it takes a lot of time for one to become hidden again.
Basic Abilities: Dragons are giant, scaly lizards most often bedecked with long horns, armor-like scales, fangs and wings, as well as long whip-like tails. They can speak in the numerous tongues of various other creatures with little exposure to their language. They are all incredibly strong, they can all fly, and they all breathe various deadly fumes from their mouths as a defense. The degree by which they do these things, however, depends on the environment they dwell within. Dragons are highly adaptable to numerous environments, and the way they have adapted to their environments have created various dragon sub-species.
Despite their beastly forms, dragons are as intelligent as most humanoid beings, and can be easily offended if they are treated less so. Also, dragons live for very long periods of time, usually up to 2000 years, with the females capable of laying an egg once every century.
Extra Alternate Abilities: (CHOOSE 1 TYPE)
-Mountain and cave dwelling dragons are the most common type. They dwell within the darkness and the great polar tips of mountains. Their scales are red, black, gray, or green. They fly by gliding along strong wind currents with large, wide, wings and breathe fire from an inner furnace that keeps their bodies warm despite the harsh cold dampness of their living-spaces.
-Water dragons live on the bottoms of lake floors. Their bodies are long and serpent-like, and they are incredibly fast swimmers as well as fliers. their scales are white, blue or turquoise. Water dragons have small wings but they can still fly by flailing their body into the wind rapidly, their serpentine bodies bouncing off of wind currents at an incredibly fast speed. Water dragons do not breathe fire, but instead they breathe very cold air, which freezes enemies into ice upon contact.
-Swamp dragons, as the name suggests, live in the deepest darkest wetlands. They are usually very fat with round, corpulent bodies, as their swamp-dwelling gives them access to great amounts of food. Their scales are usually dark green or brown. Swamp dragons are too heavy to fly with their wings, but can fly by filling their bodies with gasses that are lighter than air and floating. Swamp dragons breathe poisonous gas, but can still breathe fire if they are by a source of fire they can ignite with their toxic fumes.
Reason for not being recognized:
They are very seditary and do not work well with others. Not to mention some members of the council believe them to be extinct or close to extinct.
